Congratulations to Zehra for winning the poster prize at the Melbourne Cell and Developmental Biology meeting!
Brent has accepted a nomination from The Australian Academy of Science to join the National Committee for Cellular and Developmental Biology as an Early–Mid Career Researcher member.
The role of the committee is: 1. To connect the Academy to science and scientists in Australia; 2. To link the Academy to Australian scientific societies in order to work together to promote the development of the discipline; 3. To link Australian science in the disciplines to world science, in particular through the membership of appropriate international organisations; 4. To ensure that Australia has a voice and a role in the global development of the disciplines; 5. To provide strategic science policy advice, to the Academy, as input to Academy science policy statements, and (with the approval of the Executive Committee of the Academy) to the Australian Government and Australian organisations. Brent is very honoured to receive the nomination, and his appointment will extend until 30 June 2018. Brent has been successful in his application for a Young Investigator Award to attend and present his research at the 2016 Asian-Pacific Society for Neurochemistry (APSN) meeting in Kuala Lumpur (list of awardees).
The award includes: - a waiver of registration fee. - an invitation to APSN2016 Gala Dinner. - US$300 for travel and accommodation expenses. The conference runs from August 27th - 30th, and more information on the meeting can be found here: APSN 2016 Brent has been successful in applying for a competitive Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute Travel Award for 2016.
The award (worth $2000) will be used by Brent to present his research at the 2016 C. elegans Topic Meeting: Neuronal Development, Synaptic Function & Behavior held in Nagoya, Japan. Brent has received the best publication award for 2015 from the Queensland Brain Institute for his paper published in Nature in 2015. Brent was also a joint winner of this award in 2014, for his publication in Cell Reports.
Brent has been awarded two NHMRC project grants, each spanning 2016- 2018. In a year in which we have seen the lowest success rate for project grants in the history of the NHMRC (at a miserable 13.7%), this funding is extremely precious and provides the perfect platform for the Neumann lab to grow and achieve our scientific goals.
More information about the 2015 funding outcomes from the NHMRC can be found here: https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants-funding/outcomes-funding-rounds Brent attended the 2015 Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association of Australia awareness day held at the Concord Hospital in Sydney, to receive a cheque for a successful CMTAA research grant.
